SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE
PECHORA REGION IN A CHANGING
ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY (SPICE) 2000-2003

 What is SPICE ?

SPICE stands for sustainable development of the Pechora region in a changing environment and society. It is a research project funded for a period of 3 years (2000-2003) by the INCO-COPERNICUS 2 Programme of the European Commission. The overall aim of the SPICE project is to present possible strategies for sustainable development of the Pechora region (Northeast European Russia) formulated in consultation with stakeholders, to the regional governments. The first task of SPICE is to analyse the current situation of society and environment in the Pechora region. SPICE then assesses alternative scenarios for the sustainable development of the Pechora region that help ensure the future economic and social well-being of its population and protect its unique natural environment. The project is interdisciplinary by its nature and involves economists, civil engineers, social anthropologists, geohydrologists, ecologists and experts in Arctic global change, pollution and biodiversity. The project has received interest and endorsement from the Administrations of the Komi Republic and the Nenets Autonomous Region.
