Alpine Glaciers

An advanced glaciology practical training course "Alpine Glaciers" will be arranged in Obergurgl, Austria. The objectives are to

 

§       Provide the an overview of alpine glaciology research;

§       Introduce glacier modelling and climate/glacier interactions

§       Show aspects of applied glaciology

§       Introduce geophysical, meteorological and geomorphology field techniques

 

This course is multidisciplinary and the target group is post-graduate students. The school is supported by EU Fifth Framework and the Nordic Council of Ministers Nordic Arctic Research Programme and is event 4 of the GlacioEuroLab series. Half board accommodation in Obergurgl, bus and chair lift transportation around Innsbruck and Obergurgl are free to research students. Additional travel support is also available, please contact J. Moore for more information on eligibility for support and detailed costs. The course includes lectures, exercises, and opportunities for glacier recreation but is strongly biased towards practical field-work.  There is no registration fee.

 

Students should be reasonably fit and bring waterproof hiking gear, and their lap tops. A limited number of lap tops can be supplied from the university. Course material will be copied and distributed or put on the web.

 

The students will share double rooms, breakfast and dinner are served at the Sportheim, lunch  must be taken at a restaurant.
